Granny Square Cross body bag pattern
I took this cute little cross-body bag with me on my Vietnam trip! It was the perfect size to fit my phone, wallet, and a squished up plastic bottle haha. This bag came with me around the streets of Ho Chi Minh city, along the golden hand bridge in Ba Na Hills, and on a boat ride through the beautiful Ha Long Bay.
Yes this bag saw some things… and after the trip I had to toss her. That trip was rough for the bag haha. I would recommend using a different type of yarn if you are planning to use and abuse this bag like I did. (maybe twine or cotton?)
The brown bag above has 180 chs for the strap, while the cream / blue one has 160 chs.
Project time: 2 hours
I used Big Twist acrylic yarn from Joann’s!

Making the Granny Squares
You will be making two of these squares. Feel free to switch up this granny square pattern with any other one that you like, making sure the measurements of the square are about 5 inches by 5 inches.
Round 1: Starting with the Dark Green yarn, make a magic circle, ch 2 (this will count as the first dc), 15 dc in to the circle, sl st to the 2nd ch and finish off. (16 sts)
Round 2: Switch to the Mint Green yarn, ch 2, yo, pull up a loop loosely so that there is some slack between your project and the working yarn, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all loops (there should be 7 loops) on your hook, * 1 puff st, ch 1 *, repeat everything in the * * in the next 15 sts, sl st into the first st of the round, and finish off. (16 sts)
Round 3: Switch to the Cream yarn, we will be working in the ch sps for this round. Ch 2, yo, insert your hook into the ch sp, pull up a loop, yo, pull through the first 2 loops, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through the last 3 loops on your hook, ch 1, * 1 dc3tog, ch 1 *, repeat everything in the * * in the next 15 sps, sl st to the first st in the round, and finish off. (16 sts)
Round 4: Switch to the Brown yarn, we will be working in the ch sps. Into a sp, ch 3, 2 tc in the same sp. * 3 dc in the next sp, 3 hdc in the next sp, 3 dc in the next sp, 3 tc in the next sp, ch 3, 3 tc in the same sp to create a corner of the granny square , repeat everything in the * * 2 more times. 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 3 tc, ch 3, sl st into the first ch 3. (I’m more of a visual person, so refer to the image shown if you are too). (72 sts, including the chs)
Round 5: Ch 2, 2 dc in the same sp, 3 dc in each of the next 3 sps. When you get to a corner; 3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc in the same sp. 3 dc in each of the next 4 sps, repeat until you’ve crocheted in each sp, sl st into the 2nd ch, and finish off. (84 sts, including the chs)
Completing the Bag
Pancake the two granny squares together with the “right” sides facing the outside. Start sl sts on one corner of the squares, and continue along three sides of the squares.
You should be left with a little pouch, now we well start on extending the length of the bag.
Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, 18 dc in each of the next sts, 3 dc in the next sp, 3 dc in the next sp, 18 dc in each of the next sts, 3 dc in the next sp, sl st into the ch 3. (48 sts, including ch 3)
Round 2-3: Repeat round 1 for the next 2 rounds.
Round 4: Here we will be making the strap of the bag. Ch 160. (you can adjust this to however long or short you want the strap to be). My chained strap measured about 35 inches and 89 centimeters.
Round 5: Sl st into a st on the other side of the bag. In order to make the strap more secure, I like to do a round of sc all the way around the rim of the bag. Making sure that the straps are on the inside of the sc row. (48 sts)
And you’re done! Go enjoy your bag and take it on trips of your own :)
