wavy brim crochet hat

This hat was commissioned by one of my friends and I LOVE the way that it turned out. This is one of the first patterns I’ve made, so I hope it’s not too hard to follow. This pattern is super customizable, I’m going to put out another pattern that looks a little cleaner. (AKA I used a smaller crochet hook and more hdcs).

Project Time: 5-6 hours

Materials:

  • Multi-Colored Weight 4 Yarn

  • 6.5 mm Hook

  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • sl st = slip stitch

  • yo = yarn over

  • ch = chain

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • dc = double crochet

  • blo = back loops only

  • inc = increase

  • dec = decrease

Special Stitches:

  • Increase = 2 hdc in the same stitch

  • Decrease = yo, insert your hook into the st and pull through a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert your hook into the next st and pull through a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through the last 3 loops

Pattern:

Base of the Hat:

Round 1: 10 hdc into the magic circle, sl st into the first hdc (10 sts)

Round 2: 1 inc in each st, sl st into the first hdc (20 sts)

Round 3: *1 inc, 1 hdc; repeat* until the end of the round, sl st into the first hdc (30 sts)

Round 4: *1 inc, 2 hdc; repeat* until the end of the round, sl st into the first hdc (40 sts)

Round 5: *1 inc, 3 hdc; repeat* until the end of the round, sl st into the first hdc (50 sts)

Round 6: *1 inc, 4 hdc; repeat* until the end of the round, sl st into the first hdc (60 sts)

Round 7: *1 inc, 5 hdc; repeat* until the end of the round, sl st into the first hdc (70 sts)

This should be about 7 inches or a little less than 7 inches. Adjust the number of rounds depending on the size of your yarn / hook.

Body of the Hat:

Round 1: Ch 2, dc in the blo, sl st into the first dc (70 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each st, sl st into the first dc (70 sts)

During rounds 3-6, you can adjust the amount of dec depending on the size of your head or how fitted you want your hat to be.

Round 3: Ch 2, pick 2 sts to dec (roughly across from each other), dc in all of the other sts (68 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, pick 4 sts to dec (roughly evenly spaced), dc in all of the other sts (64 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, pick 2 sts to dec (roughly across from each other), dc in all of the other sts (62 sts)

Round 6: Ch 2, pick 2 sts to dec (roughly across from each other), dc in all of the other sts (60 sts)

Brim of the Hat:

Round 1: 4 hdc (or dc) in each st (240 sts)

Round 2: 1 hdc (or dc) in each st (240 sts)

Round 3: 1 hdc (or dc) in each st, sl st in the last st, finish off (240 st)
